Design theory

Ok so you've decided that you want to build an instrument, here are a few things to consider.

Do you know what the musically active part of the instrument is?

It is defined using the Sachs Hornbostel caregories

  • idiophones - where the vibrating element is the item itself - e.g. a marimba bar
  • aerophones - where the vibrating element is an enclosed column of air - e.g. a saxophone
  • membranophones - where the vibrating element is a skin or other membrane e.g. a drum
  • chordophones - where the vibrating element is a string e.g. a guitar
  • Hydrophones / hydraulophones - where the vibrating element is liquid
  • Electrophones - where the sound-producing element is electronic

How to make the instrument efficient

  • Making an instrument louder without electronic amplification-  resonance and radiation.
